Harlingen CERT

The Community Emergency Response Team program trains volunteers to prepare for the types of disasters that their community may face through hands-on practice and realistic exercises. CERT members learn how to help organize basic disaster response, to promote preparedness by hosting and participating in community events and how to safely respond to man-made and natural hazards.

The CERT program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that many impact their area and trains them on basic disaster response skills. Some topics are fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster psychology, terrorism awareness and basic disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach in volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

Skywarn(R) Storm Spotter Training

Across the Nation, dedicated volunteers provide first-hand reports of hazardous weather, including floods, hail, damaging or destructive winds, tornadoes, wildfires, winter storms, and more, to their local officials, and the National Weather Service (NWS). The same occurs across the Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas. A Skywarn® Storm Spotter’s primary reason to become certified is to help protect the lives and property of the citizens across the region.

The goal of the training is to prepare the spotter to identify hazardous weather conditions, how to report that information to the local NWS, and personal safety.
A spotter will receive a basic certification by taking both of the online courses
A spotter will receive a full certification by taking both of the online courses, and attending a live class or a live webinar (per partner arrangement)

To find out more about this training, contact their office.
